A Level Biology AQA (7402) 

Subject Entry Requirements: Grade 7 at GCSE Biology and GCSE Maths is advised.

Subject Entry Requirements: Grade 7 in GCSE Chemistry is advised. Grade 8/9 in Maths is advised for those pursuing Grade A at A Level. 

The specification provides full detail of the eight topics studied: 

  1. Biological molecules 
  1. Cells 
  1. Organisms exchange substances with their environment 
  1. Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms  
  1. Energy transfers in and between organisms  
  1. Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments 
  1. Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems  
  2. The control of gene expression 

Three two-hour written papers are taken at the end of Year 13. 

There is no separate practical assessment; practical competency is continually assessed during regular class practical work and questions assessing practical skills will be included on the written papers.

The course comprises of three exams:  

  • Paper 1: Topics 1–4 (including relevant practical skills), assessed in a 2-hour written examination worth 35% of the A Level. Of the 91 marks, 76 are for short- and long-answer questions, with 15 marks awarded for extended responses. 
  • Paper 2: Topics 5–8 (including relevant practical skills), assessed in a 2-hour written examination worth 35% of the A Level. Of the 91 marks, 76 are for short- and long-answer questions, with 15 marks awarded for a comprehension question. 
  • Paper 3: Topics 1–8 (including relevant practical skills), assessed in a 2-hour written examination worth 30% of the A Level. Of the 78 marks, 38 are for structured questions (including practical techniques), 15 for data analysis, and 25 for an essay (choice of two titles).

Biology also offers a rich programme of enrichment, including trips to leading university departments. These experiences provide valuable insight into cutting-edge research, inspire ambition and help pupils see the exciting pathways that Biology can open.
