Why Study Music Technology?
A Level Music Technology is a dynamic and highly practical course for students who are curious about how music is created, recorded and produced. No prior Music Technology qualification is required, just enthusiasm, commitment and a willingness to experiment creatively with sound.
You will develop a strong foundation in both the theory and practice of music production, using professional-standard equipment in our purpose-built recording studio. From sequencing and recording to editing and mixing, the course places a clear emphasis on hands-on learning, allowing you to create and shape music in a modern, industry-relevant way.
What is the exam board and the route?
We study A Level Music Technology (Edexcel 9MTO). There are no entry requirements for this subject.
Assessment
- Recording (20%): Produce a professional recording of an existing track
- Technology-Based Composition (20%): Create an original piece using digital tools
- Listening and Analysing (25%): A 1 hour 30 minute written and listening exam
- Producing and Analysing (35%): A practical and written exam testing production skills
Further Information
You will study in a well-equipped, forward-thinking department, using industry standard equipment in our 2 recording studios. There are also opportunities to support live recordings, work with ensembles, and take part in workshops and enrichment activities.
This course pairs well with a wide range of subjects, particularly Music, Maths and Physics. It opens pathways into sound engineering, music production, film and media, as well as broader creative and technical careers.
