Lower (Years 6 to 7)

School should be a preparation for life and academic attainment is very much central to that. We equip boys with a broad portfolio of skills which enables them to excel in public examinations and access the top universities and the courses of their choice. Equally important is that our curriculum trains our boys to be independent learners who love learning and have the self-discipline and motivation to aim high and to realise their potential.

In Years 7, boys have a range of up to 18 subjects to study, all taught by subject specialists.  This enables them to experience a host of academic disciplines and begin to develop their personal talents and interests. From Year 9 onwards, pupils begin to refine the subjects they wish to study, tailoring choices to their personal aptitudes.

Year 6

A stepping stone to success

The step up to senior school can seem like a big leap from your son’s familiar junior school environment. Year 6 is the perfect opportunity for boys to start at the Grammar School and build foundations and familiarity, be academically stretched and supported before moving up to senior school. Year 12 mentors visit the Year 6 form time every two weeks and boys benefit from time to take a few small steps rather than one big leap.

Year 6 has its own classroom area at the heart of the campus with access to a world of opportunity in our Sports, Music, Drama, Art, Science, Assemblies, Dining, Clubs and Trips. Year 6 boys are taught by specialists in Science, Music, Computing and Art, with access to all the Senior School facilities. In Music, all pupils select an instrument and enjoy a structured rehearsal each week which culminates in a performance at the end of the academic year.

Boys also have access to many lunchtime clubs. Popular clubs are; History Club, Beekeeping, Mini Beasts, Debating, Computing, Swimming and Basketball.

Year 6 pupils are nurtured as a distinct cohort but with extensive opportunity to mix with Year 7’s, get used to navigating the campus, make lasting friendships and connections, and soon feel very much part of our mutually supportive community.

The Year 6 set-up is great. It really felt like the boys will have a strong foundation to ground them before launching into the big school.

Year 7

LGS Year 7 pupils hit the ground running with an action packed, academically demanding and all-round fulfilling experience of Year 7 at Loughborough Grammar School.

Year 7 boys benefit from superb pastoral care and Form Tutor support so that each boy is safe, happy and confident; a stimulating academic programme with 14 subjects – so your son is challenged and engaged; and co-curricular options in every imaginable field that stretch, excite and enthrall.

Everywhere, variety is key and choice a bonus. Our Year 7 boys relish opportunity to develop on all fronts without boundaries. It is why we encourage enthusiastic participation, whether that’s on the sports field, on the stage, in the community, in public speaking, learning to cook or building a buggy. The choice is limitless and the experience formative, providing the best way to build friendships, confidence, life skills and to smile all the while.

Wherever your son turns and wherever his talents lie, he will find his interests supported and encouraged by the finest facilities, teaching and coaching. We have professional coaches in all sports, and we are the current county champions in hockey, rugby and cricket. We have one of the finest music facilities in the country and a rich programme of concerts, recitals and festivals and we look beyond our own beautiful location, with popular trips and adventures, including a 3-day residential get away for the whole year group each summer.

It is almost impossible to list everything Year 7 offers and the quality of the facilities, care and community your son will encounter every single day. We really do hope that your son has the opportunity to join us and join in.
