Academic Scholarship Programme

Academic Scholarship Programme – A Scholar’s Journey

We offer a small number of academic scholarships which have a small financial reward but offer considerable academic prestige. Those who earn the title will take on the Scholar’s Journey, a program of extension activities allowing likeminded individuals to excel together to develop and showcase their talents for the benefit of the whole community.

Scholarships are based entirely on academic merit and are dependent on examination performance so there is no need to make a separate application to be considered for these awards.

Sports Scholarship

Sports Scholarship

There are two application points for our Sports Scholarships: Year 9 (13+) and Year 12 (16+). Recipients of the 13+ Scholarship would need to re-apply for the 16+ Scholarship in Year 12. The Sports Scholarship comes with a fee remission of up to 20%.

The exact amount will be at the discretion of the Head of the relevant School in consultation with the Director of Sport, based on the individual’s sporting ability and potential in the School’s major team sports. To be considered, applicants should be at least near selection for age-relevant representative and development pathways at county or regional level.

Lorraine Simmons Scholarship

Lorraine Simmons Scholarship

Next Awarded: September 2025-26

The Lorraine Simmons Scholarship was established in memory of a well-known Assistant Matron at Loughborough Grammar School. Alumni remember “Miss Sim” as an immensely warm and kind woman who looked after her boys with real care and friendship that in many cases continued for years after they left.

The scholarship is awarded on academic merit and financial need to support a boy who would never otherwise have the opportunity to attend the school. It provides 100% tuition fees for a bright local boy from Year 7 through to Year 13.

The recipient must live locally to the school, with a strong preference for a pupil from a disadvantaged background in Loughborough or Shepshed. To enquire further please contact the Registrar.

The Greasley Bursaries

The Greasley Bursaries

Next Awarded: September 2026-27

With sincere thanks to alum Derek Greasley (LGS 1956), The Greasley Bursaries have been established to support prospective pupils of Loughborough Grammar School and Loughborough High School.

Derek, who joined Year 7 at Loughborough Grammar School in 1948, left a life-changing donation in his Will to fund ‘The Greasley Bursaries’. Open to pupils from Charnwood, the bursaries will cover tuition fees and potentially other associated costs, meaning that recipients can fully immerse themselves in the academic and co-curricular opportunities from Year 7 through to Year 13 at Loughborough Grammar School or Loughborough High School.

The bursaries are awarded on academic merit and financial need to support a boy or girl who would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend either school.

Bursaries

Years 7 – 11

Bursaries Years 7 – 11

The School can also make limited funds available, according to financial need, to able pupils through the Schools Assisted Places Scheme. These awards are made based on academic merit in the Entrance Assessment and will involve a meeting at School with a member of the Bursary staff. We support as many applications as we can and, in 2024/25, several pupils received fee reductions.

Bursaries are means-tested awards given to support families whose child demonstrates academic excellence and wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford some, or all of, the school fees. Parents who notify us that they require financial assistance are invited to complete a bursary application form. Following a successful application, bursaries can range from 5% to 100% and are dependent upon a family’s financial circumstances. We do not publish guidance on qualifying income levels as each application is assessed on a case-by-case basis. To qualify for financial support, families are expected to be doing everything they can to maximise their income before applying to the school for help.

An independent company will carry out a home visit to assist in the assessment of family circumstances. All applications are then considered by the Bursaries Committee, chaired by the Head. For further information, please contact grammar.admissions@lsf.org to arrange an initial conversation.

School Assisted Places are also available for Year 12 entry on up to 50% of fees (larger bursaries may be available, dependent upon exceptional performance at GCSE). These are dependent upon performance in the GCSE examinations, parental income and a meeting at the School.
