Music

“Our Music School is a place where children across our family of schools can be inspired to achieve their very best. Loughborough Grammar School benefits from a purpose-built, state-of-the-art music faculty.

Our dual focus of excellence and inclusivity shine through in everything that we offer. We are delighted to announce that our Music School has partnered with Coach House Pianos, the UK’s largest independent piano supplier, to equip our purpose-built Music School with a range of incredible new pianos. This gives our pupils the exceptional opportunity to play the finest pianos whether as a top-level pianist or a beginner in Reception. Our two top-of-the-range recording studios have put the study of Music Technology firmly on the map as an open access co-curricular or enrichment option, a GCSE and A Level option and also an option for individual music lessons all taught by our specialist staff. Our varied and diverse curriculum is underpinned by a huge variety of instrumental ensembles and choirs. There are opportunities for all our pupils to perform, both within the schools and further afield. Individual music lessons are a real strength here, with a large team of specialists supporting and encouraging those who wish to learn any instrument, to sing, or to perform via Music Technology.

I hope that this gives you a flavour of what makes the music department so exceptional. This is a place not only where individual achievements are recognised and nurtured, but where any pupil who wants to be involved will find a place for them, with a warm welcome. If you would like to find out more, please do explore our web pages, pop in and see us, or come to a concert or two!”

Excellence

We are committed to providing the very best in musical education and opportunities for our pupils with programmes designed to stretch and inspire. The development of our award-winning Music department in 2006 and our partnership with Coach House pianos in 2025, are each a testament to this determination to offer enhanced provision in this important area.

Our music staff are some of the best both regionally and nationally and are able to teach our students to diploma level and beyond, regularly enabling our top students to access places at prestigious music colleges.

Our Scholars are our most able and most ambitious students and follow a pathway that enables them to access opportunities they would not otherwise have. Alongside a rigorous but supportive mentoring scheme they have access to Healthy Posture and Movement lessons, additional performing opportunities, repertoire sessions and our enhanced music programme.

Opportunities For All

Loughborough Schools Music is a place of exceptional individual and collaborative efforts where everyone is invited to contribute. There are over 100 annual performance opportunities and 30+ ensembles and choirs. We hold weekly senior lunchtime concerts (Lunchtime Live) and annual faculty concerts (Wind and Brass, Strings and Orchestras, Keyboard and Chamber Music).

Our Spring Concert in De Montfort Hall, Leicester is our main showcase event of the year, showing off our most senior ensembles and allowing Year 13 musicians the opportunity to perform a concerto movement.

To finish the year our festival style event ‘Al Fresco’ is always popular, with two stages showing four hours of back-to-back music from all our musicians from pre-prep to Year 13! There are also countless informal opportunities to perform including regular performances in assemblies and both house and instrumental (open externally) music competitions.

Ensembles

Our vibrant co-curricular offering ensures that there is an ensemble for every orchestral or Indian classical musician who wants to join one (and every pupil is encouraged to join one!)

Large ensembles are the backbone of the department with Concert and Symphonic Orchestras, Big Band, Concert Band and Symphonic Wind Band regularly filling our Recital Hall. Chamber music is another core part of our programme, with regular rehearsals and performances by piano trios, string quartets, wind quintets, and other ensembles.

We run numerous instrument-specific ensembles from Percs 1 and 2 for percussion afficionados and Flute Choir to Brass Ensemble, Senior Tabla and JamFest for electric guitar lovers.

Finally, our two liturgical choirs perform regularly in services, while our large-scale Spring Concert Choir brings together over 300 voices for a truly memorable experience.

In The Community

“Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without.”

— Confucius

We also play a major role in music making in the community and for charity, which we believe to be a vital part of our remit. We are regularly called upon to take part in town events; the switching on of the Christmas lights and the opening of the fair being just two examples. We contribute monthly to the lunchtime concert series at Loughborough Parish Church ‘Tasting Notes’, often giving our Music Scholars an opportunity to shine in a more formal setting.

Become a Music Scholar

If your child is a gifted pianist, vocalist or instrumentalist, we warmly encourage you to enquire about our Music Scholarship Programme. Our scholarships support talented pupils with tailored tuition, performance opportunities and preparation for further study.

Many of our scholars have gone on to win full university scholarships and places at world-renowned institutions.
