Our pupils benefit from access to a multidisciplinary support team, a tailored performance structure, and a school environment that values high achievement in all areas. The programme helps each individual manage the pressures of performance sport while continuing to excel in the classroom.
Designed around the needs of LGS boys, this initiative reflects our commitment to fostering potential on the pitch, in the gym, and beyond.

Everything You Need to Know
The Student Athlete Programme at LGS is open to pupils in Years 8–13 who demonstrate a high level of sporting achievement and potential for continued development.
Ideal candidates are:
- Competing at national or regional level in their chosen sport
- Highly motivated and self-disciplined
- Willing to commit to the demands of both academic and sporting excellence
- Focused on long-term development, not just short-term success
All sports are considered whether team-based or individual, based on performance, potential, and training commitment.
To apply, boys must submit a Student Athlete Programme application form, followed by an interview.
Selection is based on:
- Current performance level and competitive achievements
- Commitment to training and attitude toward improvement
- Evidence of performance behaviours (e.g. resilience, preparation, focus)
- Potential for growth within a performance structure
Priority is given to athletes ranked nationally or representing their country, followed by regional-level athletes and those within county or academy systems.
A limited number of additional places may be offered to boys who show standout ability or consistent high-level performance during school competition.
- Applications open: September 2025
- Deadline: 12:00, Friday 10 October
- Interviews: Week of 13 October
- Programme begins: Monday 3 November
Programme members engage in regular workshops, strength & conditioning sessions, and mentoring meetings. These are scheduled around the school day, ensuring academic lessons are not disrupted.
Places are reviewed annually based on engagement, progress, and feedback. Continuation is offered to those who meet expectations and continue to grow as student athletes.
Not being selected isn’t the end of the journey. Pupils who narrowly miss out may be added to a reserve list and considered for future enrolment. Importantly, how a student responds to setbacks can itself be a defining characteristic of long-term success and a quality we look for when selecting future candidates.
