Pastoral Care and Wellbeing

Pastoral, Health and Wellbeing

At Loughborough Grammar School, we believe that outstanding pastoral care is the foundation of a boy’s success and wellbeing. Every student deserves to be seen, heard, and championed. Our approach is proactive and individualised, ensuring that each student feels supported throughout their time in LGS.

Our aim reflects the founding principles of the school: to help every student develop a strong moral compass and contribute meaningfully to society. In doing so, we want our boys to know who they are, like who they are, and to be good at being themselves.

While every student is unique, our community is united by shared values – mutual respect, integrity, and social responsibility. These principles underpin everything we do, and our pastoral care system is designed to nurture them in every aspect of school life.

At Loughborough Grammar School, pastoral care is built around a community of specialists, Pastoral Support Manager and Designated Safeguarding Lead, Heads of Section, Heads of Year, Form Tutors, School Nurses, School Counsellor, Director of Future and Head of PSHE to ensure every boy receives the right holistic support at the right time.

The school is a supportive network where boys are actively encouraged to talk about stressors and concerns with adults they trust.

Mr. Thomas Emmet (Deputy Head – Pastoral)

Year 6 and Year 7

Dedicated Form Tutors and Heads of Year, Mrs Marlow and Mr Parton, work closely with students in Years 6 and 7 to ensure a smooth and positive transition into Senior School. Each Head of Year delivers a programme designed to help students build confidence, develop friendships, and strengthen academic skills. Both academic and co-curricular achievements are celebrated, and by the end of Year 7, students are fully integrated into school life as they prepare to enter the Middle School.

At the end of Year 7, students join carefully selected Form Groups and are allocated a Head of Year who will remain with them until Year 11, providing continuity of care for the student, family, and school as they progress through the next stage of their LGS journey.

Year 6 Spotlight

Students are allocated to their Houses and actively participate in House Competitions and the co-curricular life of the School, fostering teamwork, school spirit, and a strong sense of belonging for both students and families.

Year 7 Spotlight

A tailored activities programme gives students the chance to develop a wide range of skills and explore new experiences, helping them build confidence, friendships, and a new sense of self as they settle into Senior School.

Middle School

Led by Mr Samuel Ferraby, our Heads of Year and Form Tutors guide boys through Years 8 and 9, a crucial stage for reinforcing scholarly habits, strengthening school culture, and supporting future decision-making.

The Middle School experience focuses on self-discovery, continuing to nurture intrinsic motivation and personal growth, while helping students understand their connection to the world around them.

Middle School Spotlight

A STEM team-building day in Year 8 brings new Form Groups together with their Form Tutors and Head of Section, helping students build friendships and problem solve together within a scientific context.

Senior School

Under the leadership of Mr Matt Sollars, the Senior School prepares boys for the challenges of GCSEs and beyond, ensuring they have the pastoral and academic support needed to thrive. In the Senior School, the pastoral team work closely with individual students to support academic endeavour, personal growth and wellbeing while continuing to contribute towards a strong school culture.

Senior School Spotlight

Cross-foundation activities in the Upper School provide opportunities for students to collaborate with peers across the co-educational campus in activities they have chosen, helping them explore interests and strengthen their growing sense of identity.

Sixth Form

Our Sixth Form is led by Ms Emma Taplin, Director of Sixth Form, and Mr Ben Korosi, Deputy Director of Sixth Form, who are committed to creating an aspirational environment where students thrive both academically and personally.

Students work closely with a team of experienced school leaders, Form Tutors, the Director of Futures and Clinical applications, and specialist coaches for Oxbridge preparation from across the Foundation. This collaborative approach ensures that every student benefits from a bespoke, holistic, and enriching Sixth Form experience in a dedicated space within the Tower Building.

Sixth Form Spotlight

A well-established Professional Development (PDP) and Futures Programme combined with extensive leadership opportunities ensures that students are prepared and able to contribute meaningfully to their world.

Health and Wellbeing Centre – The Nest

Centrally located on our campus, The Nest provides a nurturing and private space where students can access specialist support for physical, emotional, social, and mental health concerns. Research shows that integrating physical and mental health services can reduce stigma associated with accessing services and improve outcomes. At LGS Health and Wellbeing team includes the Pastoral Support Manager, Designated Safeguarding Lead, full-time nurses, Mental Health First Aiders, and the school counsellor. They work positively and proactively with students, the wider pastoral team, families, and external agencies to ensure that every student receives the right support at the right time.

Houses

Beyond their Form Group, Year Group, and Section, students come together in vertical Houses, fostering a sense of belonging and connection across the wider school community. Each House provides opportunities for students to participate in activities that promote wellbeing, teamwork, and school spirit.

Every House is led by a Head of House and supported by a student House Captain, creating a strong network of leadership and peer support.

Student Mentoring

Our Student Mentoring Programme is a student-led initiative designed for Sixth Form students who take on the role of mentors. Each mentor receives tailored training to help them build positive relationships and provide guidance to students in the Middle and Upper School. Training includes safeguarding, diversity and inclusion and mental health first aid.

Student Mentoring Spotlight

Working closely with Ms Emma Taplin, a Sixth Form student has developed a new mentoring programme in response to her call for all Sixth Formers to leave a positive legacy. This initiative reflects the spirit of leadership and community, providing meaningful support for younger students while creating a lasting impact within the school.

Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging

LGS is committed to promoting equity, diversity and inclusion as central to it ethos and community life. Everyday actions, celebration events, awareness weeks and societies ensure that belonging is fostered for all.

Spotlight

During Culture Week, students enjoy an extensive programme of cultural events and workshops, giving them the opportunity to explore, experience, and celebrate diverse cultures.

PSHE and Careers

Mrs. Barfield is the school’s dedicated Head of PSHE who, together with other specialists, has developed a comprehensive, spiralled PSHE curriculum for Years 6–13. This curriculum is adaptive and age-appropriate, ensuring continuity and progression throughout.

PSHE and Careers Spotlight: Career Networking Suppers provide invaluable opportunities for students to connect with alumni, parents, and peers who share similar career interests. These events help students build professional networks and gain real-world insights into their chosen sectors.
