our house system
Fostering community, competition and character
At Loughborough Grammar School, the House System is a vibrant tradition designed to support pastoral care, leadership development and school spirit. Rooted in our heritage and integral to every boy’s journey, it provides identity, motivation and belonging.
Our Houses
Every boy is placed in one of four Houses upon joining LGS – Abney, Yates, Pulteney and Davys, each named after notable alumni who exemplify the qualities we strive to inspire.

- Each House is overseen by a Head of House – ensuring that each pupil is known, valued, and encouraged.
- House Captains (typically Upper Sixth pupils), support younger boys, lead House assemblies, and help organise activities – reinforcing inter-year relationships and leadership.

- Houses compete throughout the year in sports (rugby, hockey, cricket, cross country, tennis and more), as well as quiz, chess, bridge and music contests. The Stamper Cup is awarded to the top sporting House.
- Non‑sporting competitions – such as music, drama, debating and charity fundraising – contribute points towards the Eagle Trophy, recognising broader excellence and engagement.
- Praise points, merits and achievements in academic and co‑curricular life also count toward House totals.

- Beyond sporting fixtures and quizzes, Houses host a range of events – including talent shows, bake‑offs, art and photo competitions, and charity fundraising that are designed to engage boys across interests and year‑groups.
- House assemblies share updates, celebrate successes, and set goals, encouraging community spirit and healthy rivalry throughout the term.
