Half-Term Highlights: April 2025

This half-term has been full of highlights as we were delighted to welcome two Loughborough Schools Foundation alumni pupils back onto campus to enrich the learning of current Loughborough Grammar pupils. Our pupils were also involved with an engaging STEM Day, a history scholars’ workshop and Wool Club!

Learning new skills at Wool Club

Our newly established Wool Club has been a big success with boys enjoying learning knitting and crocheting skills in the Library during Friday lunchtimes. Having already made fantastic progress, they are currently putting their newfound skills to the test and working on making quilts for Rainbows Children’s Hospice.

French Language Day

Some of our Year 7 pupils, Y7 MIG, enjoyed learning French as part of the Year 7 MFL carousel this term. To celebrate French Language Day, they had a cultural lesson on French food and drink and explored famous French culinary delights, including, of course, the wonderful patisseries! The class have already enjoyed an introduction to Spanish and German and, in the weeks ahead, they’ll be learning how to express their opinion on free time activities.

Air rifle and laser pistol athletes gain valuable advice

We were delighted to welcome medal-winning sharpshooter Robyn (LHS 2024) back to the Schools to talk to our air rifle and laser pistol athletes during their senior Games lesson. During her visit, she gave an overview of the sport, answered many questions, and gave really useful individual coaching tips as we practised.

While at LHS, Robyn represented the Shooting Club and CCF teams in several competitions, including taking medals at the national finals of the British Shooting Schools Championships. Robyn was put forward for the British Shooting Pathway programme for Target Sprint – the sport that combines running and rifle shooting.

Since leaving the Walks, she has already gone on to win a National Series Championship, all the more impressive as she balances her time with her degree in Forensic Science and being a member of the Officer Training Corps.

Year 8 develop STEM skills

Year 8 challenged their minds and teamwork skills whilst enjoying a STEM day with external company, Skill Supply. They learnt all about the skills required for a role in engineering through hands-on activities, including building geodomes!

History Heritage Scholars’ Workshop

Our Year 9 History Scholars were led around Loughborough by Mr Weitzel as they enjoyed a History Heritage Scholars’ Workshop this term. From the suffragettes’ connection to the Red House to seeing the four different sites of the Grammar School through time, the Scholars discovered a range of interesting facts about the School’s history.

They also learnt about the School’s relationships with famous companies such as the Taylor’s Bell Foundry and the Hodson’s Hathernware company. The scholars enjoyed their tour of the school’s heritage and would like to thank Mr Weitzel for this excellent experience.

An insight into studying law

We were delighted to welcome alumnus and current second year Law student, Jaysol, back to the Grammar School campus this term. Currently studying at Trinity college, Cambridge, Jaysol ran two sessions for both Loughborough Grammar and Loughborough High Schools pupils on both Law and applying to Oxbridge. The interactive, discussion-style sessions were hugely insightful for our pupils who also had the chance to ask questions on the university application process, what it’s like to study Law and tips for writing a personal statement!
