Outstanding teaching, inspiring pupils

Loughborough teacher wins 2026 Teacher of Physics Award from the Institute of Physics

We are proud to celebrate the achievements of Rebecca Mack, Teacher of Physics and Head of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), who has been awarded a 2026 Teacher of Physics Award from the Institute of Physics (IOP).

The IOP is the professional body and learned society for physics in the UK and Ireland. The Teacher of Physics Award recognises Rebecca’s outstanding classroom practice, her sustained work to improve access for students across the LoughboroughGrammar School and her contributions to the wider community through peer-reviewed work and professional publications.

James Neville, Head of Loughborough Grammar School, said: “We are incredibly proud to see Rebecca’s dedication to Physics and STEM here at Loughborough Grammar School recognised by the Institute of Physics through this prestigious award. Rebecca’s approach to teaching ensures our pupils develop a deep understanding of the subject and have a wide range of opportunities to explore the world of STEM. We extend our warmest congratulations to Rebecca on this outstanding achievement.”

This follows Rebecca receiving Chartered Teacher Status by the Chartered College of Teaching just one month earlier – a professional accreditation that recognises the knowledge, skills and behaviours of highly accomplished teachers, mentors and school leaders.

As Head of STEM, Rebecca is influential in providing opportunities for pupils to take their learning beyond the curriculum. This includes weekly enrichment sessions at STEM Club and several off-timetable learning days dedicated to STEM, one of which was used as a case study showcasing effective STEM education by CREST Awards, run by the British Science Association.

Alongside this, Rebecca has written for multiple professional publications including the Association for Science Education and The Chartered College of Teaching, further highlighting how her expertise not only inspires the pupils she teaches but the wider physics education landscape.

Outstanding physics teachers do far more than teach a subject. They inspire curiosity, build confidence and help young people see how physics can unlock opportunities and shape the world around them. These awards recognise teachers whose passion, expertise and commitment have transformed the experiences of their students and colleagues alike. On behalf of the Institute of Physics, I congratulate Rebecca on this thoroughly deserved recognition and thank them for the lasting contribution they continue to make to physics education.
