We are delighted to share that Mr Martyn Gidley, who coaches cricket at Loughborough Grammar School, captained the England Over 50s Cricket Team to a clean sweep in the 2025 Marlborough Cup, winning all three fixtures.
England’s results were as follows:
- England vs USA – won by 49 runs
- England vs India – won by 97 runs
- England vs Wales – won by 55 runs
Mr Gidley played a key role throughout the tournament, both with the bat and in his tactical leadership. His spell of tight bowling against the USA helped turn that match around, and his late-innings hitting was instrumental in England winning the match.
India finished runners-up and appear to be developing a strong squad ahead of the next Over 50s World Cup, scheduled to take place in Mumbai in 2027.
Wales provided stiff competition in the final fixture, but England pulled away in the last few overs thanks to a powerful finish with the bat.
We’re proud to see one of our own leading by example on the international stage. Congratulations to Mr Gidley and the England team!
Cricket is a key sport of Loughborough Grammar School, and we’re proud to offer extensive coaching to young athletes. Our strong cricket offer sees many passionate players go on to achieve regional and even national success. In 2024/25 alone, the Foundation saw one pupil selected to play for the U18 England team.
