Building confidence, camaraderie and lasting memories
Boys from Loughborough Grammar School’s U14 rugby team recently returned from a memorable end-of-season tour, designed to recognise their commitment and hard work across the year. The trip combined competitive fixtures with a range of team-building experiences, offering pupils the opportunity to develop both on and off the pitch.
The tour began on with a fixture in Sheffield against Birkdale School. In a closely contested match, Loughborough Grammar delivered an impressive performance, narrowly losing by a single score. The standard of rugby on display reflected the progress the team has made this season, with pupils demonstrating resilience, teamwork and skill in equal measure.
Following the fixture, the group enjoyed lunch together in the sunshine before travelling to their hotel in Leeds. The evening provided a relaxed opportunity for the boys to unwind, recharge their batteries with a popular ‘build your own burger’ dinner followed by ten-pin bowling, where the friendly competitive spirit continued off the pitch.
The following day, after an early start and a hearty breakfast, the boys headed over to Go Ape, where they spent three hours tackling high ropes and zip lines. The activity proved to be a highlight of the tour, particularly for those who embraced new challenges and stepped outside their comfort zones.
Rugby coach and PE teacher Nick Carroll reflected on the impact of these moments: “It was fantastic to see some of the quieter boys really come into their own over the course of the trip. Experiences like this help to build confidence in a way that extends beyond rugby, and that is what makes it so worthwhile.”
The group then travelled to Xscape in Castleford for lunch and some time in the arcades, before returning to the hotel for plenty of pizza followed by a trip to Odsal Stadium. There, pupils watched a Super League fixture between Bradford Bulls and Huddersfield Giants, experiencing the atmosphere of a professional rugby league match in front of a crowd of around 10,000 spectators.
Trips like this are about much more than results. They are an important part of building team culture, instilling confidence and creating shared experiences. The boys have worked hard all season, and it is rewarding to see them enjoying their rugby together, as well as these social opportunities, and forming bonds that will stay with them for years to come. While success on the scoreboard is always welcomed, the true impact of the tour lies in the personal development of each pupil and the strengthening of the team as a whole.
