Year 9 Rugby Tour: A Reward for Dedication

Loughborough Grammar School’s Year 9 rugby players embarked on an unforgettable rugby tour adventure to London as a well-deserved reward for their dedication and commitment throughout the rugby season. Organised by PE teacher Mr Tom Halfhide, the tour was packed with a mix of sporting challenges, cultural experiences, and special behind-the-scenes opportunities.

The trip kicked off on Thursday lunchtime with the team traveling to London, where they faced Campion School in a competitive rugby match. The boys demonstrated skill and teamwork throughout the tough game and to celebrate their efforts, the evening was filled with fun activities, including bowling, laser tag, and a well-earned McDonald’s.

Friday’s itinerary was filled with iconic London sights and unique experiences. The group witnessed the ceremonial changing of the guards on the Horse Guards Parade and had a visit to the Household Cavalry Museum. One of the highlights of the day was when they visited the Horse Guards, where the boys had the rare chance to go behind the scenes and meet the horses. A special moment came when they met Monty, a horse that Mr. Halfhide had cared for during his time in the Household Cavalry and rode on guard and parades.

After exploring a bustling food market, the team enjoyed a private tour of Twickenham Stadium, home of English rugby. The day ended on a high note with a ride on the London Eye, offering breathtaking views of the capital, followed by a very civilised sunset stroll along the Southbank to St Paul’s Cathedral, and pizza to round off the evening.

Saturday brought more sporting excitement as the boys enjoyed a multi-sport session at Walpole Park in Ealing, where they played touch rugby, football, and frisbee. They then headed to Ealing Trailfinders, where they received coaching from two first team championship rugby players before watching an intense match that ended in an 82-5 victory against Nottingham.

Reflecting on the trip, Mr. Halfhide shared his pride in the boys: “Organising this trip was a fantastic opportunity to provide the boys with some truly unique experiences, from going behind the scenes at the Household Cavalry Museum to a private tour of Twickenham Stadium. Everywhere we went, people commented on their impeccable manners, enthusiasm, and curiosity. They engaged fully, asked great questions, and were an absolute pleasure to spend time with.”

The Year 9 rugby tour was not only a celebration of the boys’ dedication to the sport but also an enriching and inspiring experience that they will remember for years to come.
