RAF cadet achieves gold

RAF Cadet becomes first Loughborough Grammar School student to achieve Gold Wings

We are incredibly proud to announce that Cadet Warrant Officer (CWO) and Year 13 student, Samuel, has successfully completed Advanced Glider Training and has been awarded his Gold Wings by RAFAC (Royal Air Force Air Cadets).

Notably, he is the first cadet from Loughborough Grammar School’s Combined Cadet Force (CCF) to fly solo in a fixed-wing aircraft and achieve Gold Wings, marking a historic milestone for the Contingent.

This award follows the completion of Sam’s gliding scholarship and first solo flight in May 2025 and reflects months of dedication, resilience and commitment to excellence in the air. Reaching this level is no small feat and represents the very best of what our cadets can accomplish through hard work and determination.

Advanced Glider Training focuses on improving the techniques learned through the scholarship, developing more advanced turning and precise landing techniques.

In his role as Regimental Sergeant Major of the Combined Cadet Force at Loughborough Grammar School, Sam plays a central role in improving cadet experience, supporting the command team and mentoring junior cadets. This year, he is also leading the RAST team – who have achieved national success for the last two consecutive years – as they prepare to compete again at national level. His leadership exemplifies what it means to promote a culture of ambition by inspiring others.

Loughborough Grammar School’s CCF is a co-curricular programme that offers a world of co-educational opportunities beyond the classroom. Regardless of the section our pupils choose to join – Royal Navy, Army, RAF or Coprs of Drums – cadets from both Loughborough Grammar and Loughborough High School develop valuable life skills such as leadership, self-discipline and personal responsibility, which open the doors for a wide range of fulfilling military careers.

As a member of the RAF Section, Sam has been able to explore the principles of flight, learn all about gliders and light aircraft, and pursue his Gold Wings award. Not only is reaching this milestone a huge personal achievement for Sam, but it also reflects his commitment to setting a positive example of leadership within the wider school community.
