Mock exam season can feel like a daunting start to the year following the Christmas holidays but here at Loughborough Grammar School, we strive to ensure steps are put in place to make this period feel valuable rather than unmanageable.
At this point in the year, the terms ‘revision,’ ‘recall’ and ‘retrieval’ are not unfamiliar to our boys because we begin the teaching of good exam practice long before it needs to be put into use. Our pupils have access to the LGS Guide to Effective Revision which is a booklet full of tried and tested techniques, tips and tricks collated by specialist staff and students who have taken exams and reflected on what works for them. This booklet acts as a handbook for success and ensures that every boy can find techniques to suit him.
To help support their son, parents received access to a webinar including information about how mock exams work, what study leave looks like, the equipment students require, how pupils can access exam timetables and more. Created by our Head of Year 11, the Lead Practitioner for Teaching & Learning at LGS and current Year 12 students, the video was not only a fantastic guide to revision but also conveyed a reassuring message about how useful mock exams are to success in the summer.
From working together on creating revision planners to advice on how much time to spend working and reminders that sleep, exercise and downtime are just as important as the revision itself, parents were equipped with tools to support their son’s success.
Our Year 12 students reflected on their own experiences of mock exams and James, who recommended the Pomodoro Technique to maintain concentration and avoid procrastination said: “Mock exams are an opportunity to find out what works best for you.” This sentiment was echoed by Shey, who added: “Revising isn’t just about memorising facts, it’s about building confidence in yourself and your abilities.”
Our students are encouraged to view mock exams as a way to discover what really works for them and learn that confidence grows from creating solid foundations when it comes to finding the revision techniques to unlock the key to success.
