Subject outline
At German A Level, we build on the grammar and vocabulary learnt at GCSE and build in more cultural topics, including the study of a film and book. There is also individual research on a topic related to Germany of interest to you which is 70% of the speaking exam.
How is the course assessed?
Three exams. Two written papers: listening and reading – 2 hours 30 minutes; writing – 2 hours; and a spoken exam – 25 minutes.
Why study German?
‘If I’m selling, I speak your language. If I’m buying, dann müssen Sie Deutsch sprechen!’ So said German Chancellor, Willy Brandt. Studying German at LGS doesn’t mean you’ll study German at university, it’s simply a great subject to combine with others, broadening your skills and making you more employable! Class sizes are small, you study aspects of German history and culture, get one-to-one time with the assistant, and do your own research project – ideal preparation for university. German is a very in-demand skill: according to Euro-London, it’s likely to increase your wages by around 14%. That’s not to mention trips and travel opportunities.
Complementary subjects
German works well with every subject combination.
Possible careers
Just about anything! Recent German A Level students have gone onto study Law, Medicine, Philosophy, Politics, Economics, History, Banking and more.
